Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right compression level for my medical condition?
The right compression level depends on your specific medical condition and doctor's recommendation. For varicose veins and everyday circulation support, 15-20 mmHg compression is typically recommended. For more severe venous insufficiency, lymphedema, or post-surgical recovery, 20-30 mmHg or higher compression levels may be prescribed. Our medical-grade compression products from brands like Jobst, Sigvaris, and Mediven are available in various compression levels. Always consult with your healthcare provider to determine the appropriate compression level for your specific needs.
What are the benefits of wearing compression garments daily?
Daily compression garment wear provides numerous health benefits including improved circulation, reduced leg swelling and fatigue, and prevention of blood clots during long periods of sitting or standing. For those with varicose veins, regular compression wear helps prevent worsening of the condition and reduces pain and discomfort throughout the day. Compression therapy also supports faster muscle recovery, reduces inflammation, and can help manage symptoms of lymphedema and chronic venous insufficiency. Our medical-grade compression products from trusted brands like Jobst, Sigvaris, and Mediven are designed for comfortable all-day wear while delivering consistent therapeutic pressure to maximize these health benefits.
What's the difference between medical-grade and athletic compression wear?
Medical-grade compression garments provide graduated compression that's strongest at the ankle and gradually decreases up the leg, promoting proper blood flow back to the heart. These are manufactured to strict medical standards with precise pressure measurements (mmHg) and are often prescribed for conditions like varicose veins, lymphedema, and circulation disorders. Athletic compression wear typically provides uniform compression for muscle support and recovery but may not meet medical specifications. Our medical-grade compression products from brands like Medi, Juzo, and Lohmann & Rauscher are designed for therapeutic benefits and long-term wear.
How do I properly measure for compression stockings and sleeves?
Proper measurement is crucial for effective compression therapy. For compression stockings, measure your ankle circumference at the narrowest point, calf circumference at the widest point, and leg length from floor to knee or thigh depending on the garment style. Take measurements first thing in the morning when swelling is minimal. For compression sleeves, measure circumference at multiple points along the limb. We offer professional fitting services at our Brooklyn and Manhattan locations with 15-minute, 30-minute, or 1-hour appointments available. Our trained staff can ensure you get the perfect fit for maximum therapeutic benefit.
How long should I wear compression garments and how do I care for them?
Compression garments should typically be worn during waking hours and removed before bed, unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider. For medical conditions like lymphedema or severe varicose veins, you may need to wear them daily. Proper care extends garment life - hand wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent, avoid fabric softeners and bleach, and air dry away from direct heat. Replace compression garments every 3-6 months or when they lose elasticity, as worn-out garments won't provide adequate therapeutic compression. Our premium brands like Sigvaris and Mediven are designed for durability with proper care.
